SOS/FAN was published in 2013, after more than a decade of research. When SOS/FAN was first published, the author was told it would be at least 10 years before it 'took off'. If America is to survive global warming, Americans must understand America's energy options plus America's environmental obligations; then cast their votes accordingly. When it comes to America's energy needs, Voters must put aside their political ideologies. Democrats, Republicans and Independents must come together and make sure America is on the path for a strong, stable economy which will provide the resources to successfully combat global warming.
In 1945, E. Roman Hawley was born in southeastern Oklahoma. On his father’s side he is a second generation Polish immigrant. On his mother’s side he is a Native American and a member of the Choctaw Tribe of Oklahoma. Mr. Hawley spent his formative years growing up in New Mexico where upon graduating from Tularosa High School he joined the Navy. Eleven years later, Mr. Hawley had completed his Navy obligation, graduated from Texas Tech University and had a successful computer software business. The business developed software primarily for the oil and agriculture industries. As time passed, the business focus was on the fuel industry specializing in the distribution and management of automotive fuels.
As Mr. Hawley approached retirement, he began to question the belief of the time that America could never achieve energy independence. The thought of America’s economy being under the dictates of foreign oil producing nations was inconceivable for Mr. Hawley. This led to more than a decade exploring America’s energy options along with the practicality and environmental impacts of each energy option.
Initially, Mr. Hawley viewed Environmentalists as tree hugging alarmists. Then Mr. Hawley looked into the history and science of global climate change. Scientific evidence overwhelmingly supported the premise that Earth’s climate was controlled by varying levels of atmospheric CO2. Additionally, as a result of the Industrial Revolution which is estimated to have started in the mid 1760s and was the start of mankind’s reliance on fossil fuels. As a result of the Industrial Revolution along with the dramatic increase in the human population, Earth’s atmospheric CO2 level has risen to a level not experienced in the last 800,000 years! Add to this the fact that over the last 800,000 years scientists have documented evidence showing that as atmospheric CO2 levels increased, so did Earth’s average temperatures. The question as to a causal relationship between atmospheric CO2 and Earth’s average temperatures is still debatable. But if mankind accepts the position that atmospheric CO2 level is Earth’s ‘thermostat’ and undertakes an effort to control atmospheric CO2 and is wrong, the ultimate outcome will be the same as doing nothing about global climate change. But what if scientists are correct about the causal relationship between atmospheric CO2 and global temperatures and mankind could have stopped global climate change but ignores the scientists and does nothing? The current situation of mankind is scary to say the least!
The question which must be addressed is: How can mankind avoid being a victim of climate change without causing a situation which could be just as catastrophic? Since there is currently more than enough carbon in the atmospheric make Earth’s temperature extremely uncomfortable for mankind, it is clear that reducing current and future carbon emissions will do little if anything to control Earth’s climate. Then there is the fact it is unlikely for a consensus of World leaders as to how to approach climate change. The fact is mankind’s future may be in the hands of Americans. That’s the foundation for the book: ‘Secure Our Ship! Fuel America Now!’, (SOS-FAN), as well as the website BizzEB.com.
SOS-FAN provides the reader insight into America’s energy options along with the benefits and environmental consequences of each option. Since America does not have an energy and environmental strategy, SOS-FAN puts forth a proposal which could be the foundation for America energizing its economy which in turn will provide the resources for developing the technology to monitor and control atmospheric CO2.

The focus of both SOS-FAN and BizzEB.com is to present energy and environmental options which will benefit middle class Americans. There is little doubt that climate change is serious and could be catastrophic for mankind.
Mankind owes its very existence to carbon and today’s modern way of life would not be possible without carbon based products. Americans cannot forgo America’s vast fossil fuel resources under the premise that it is best for the environment. The fact is that the exchange of carbon between Earth and the atmosphere is a natural process and only becomes a problem when the exchange gets out of balance. The problem confronting mankind is the excessive human population and the requirements for supporting human life results in more carbon being emitted into Earth’s atmosphere than can be returned to Earth. Remember your high school science, carbon is an element and as such there is as much carbon today as there was yesterday and will be tomorrow. Carbon easily attaches to other elements forming different compounds such as CO2 when carbon enters Earth’s atmosphere. If mankind is to control climate change, an artificial method of monitoring and controlling atmospheric CO2 must be developed.
The bottom line is that Americans cannot rely on the energy industry, the environmental activists or politicians to create meaningful energy and environmental policy without the direction of American voters. Americans cannot fall victims to ‘conventional’ thought along with unfounded faith that in time, all problems will be resolved. It’s just possible, mankind will not be happy with Mother Nature’s ultimate solution!
